Cooking has been a passion of both Vera and Ashwini. Right from an early age, Vera was fortunate enough to learn from accomplished and dedicated cooks who learnt cooking the traditional way – without a recipe book. She is a descendant of early Chinese settlers to the then Malaya, who have partially adapted Malay customs in an effort to assimilate into the local community. They then came to be known as the Peranakan. The Peranakan food is a fusion of contemporary Chinese cooking using Malay cooking methods and spices.
Vera’s husband is of Indian origin and from her father in law she learnt the art of using Indian spices in traditional Chinese cooking and created another fusion of sorts to the melting pot of Malaysian food. She is known to experiment by creating new dishes, playing variations on old and familiar ones and blending different recipes.
As the saying goes “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”. Vera’s daughter, Ashwini, also has the love for everything related to food. Ashwini studied cookery in New Zealand and specialises in Western cuisine. She loves to experiment with vegan and natural flavours in her cooking. She helps bring a Western influence to Asian cuisine and together the mother and daughter team create amazing fusion of mouth watering food.
